How does the seeding process work?
The purpose of seeding is to compare results from different events to determine the relative ability of all cyclists. This information is then used to allow people to cycle with others of the same ability, which reduces overtaking, thereby making events safer and more enjoyable for everyone.
How it works: In every event, a formula is applied to compare a cyclist’s time to that of the winner. An index of 0 means you are one of the fastest in the country. 100 means the slowest. The exact formula is (1 – (adjusted winner’s time / your time)) x 100. Because some events are easier than others, the winner’s time is sometimes reduced for seeding purposes – the general rule is the flatter the race, the more it is reduced. For each event in the seeding series, your index will be calculated. Only your best one will be used as your index for seeding you in the Cycle Tour. Everyone is sorted from fastest to slowest in seeding index order and allocated into groups of equal ability. We seed 50% of the solo conventional field. Thereafter you are allocated to either a PPA or Open group, depending on membership. Participation in a seeding event provides you with an opportunity to improve your seeding, ride with your peers, start earlier and avoid traffic jams.
